We would like to celebrate Ron Broadhurst for his volunteering with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Ron became a Big Brother to Elliot about four years ago when he was eight years old and hopes to continue in that role for many years. They try to spend a couple of hours together every week.
They both enjoy sports so they play a lot of sports together like tennis and basketball. Ron said one of the highlights a few years ago was attending a Boston Red Sox game-it was Elliot’s first and he was on Cloud 9! They also enjoy playing chess together-Elliot is a good chess player. Now with Covid they have had to do more interaction through texting but they can still play chess together. It’s just online while they are both at their homes.
Ron had always coached over the years and he found working with youth very fulfilling. When he decided to step away from that he missed that interaction with the kids. He heard about Big Brothers and checked it out. He felt as rewarding as that would be for a young child it would be rewarding to him also.
The process to become a “Big” is very tough and involved but Ron said he would highly recommend it. He feels it provides an opportunity to really make a difference in a young person’s life. Ron’s willingness to spend his time providing a positive influence and guiding a young person over the last four years is why we would like to recognize him as volunteer of the quarter!
